CHAPTER 16

CHANCE ENCOUNTERS

The next morning Patrik woke early, having thankfully survived the night without being murdered in his sleep by the vengeful sorceress. While he was about ninety five percent sure that Thalia was really asleep when he woke—and therefore all but impossible to wake—he still slipped from the room on the tips of his toes and closed the door as softly as possible behind him. No point taking unnecessary risks, right?

Below, he found the common room of the inn surprisingly quiet. Even for the early hour, he’d expected a few locals in for breakfast or travellers to have risen early in preparation for their journeys. He supposed it being the morning after the big festival, most would be sleeping off their night’s excesses. Plus, given the innkeepers description last night, he assumed word would have spread about what was really in the stew. Or had that been tailored slightly based on his own personal knowledge.

Huh, that’s a good question, Steve remarked as they stepped from the front door of the Sailor’s Wife onto the docks. The PQA did not elaborate further.

Despite his revelations the night before and the lumpy pile of straw he’d slept on, Patrik felt fully rested. He had to admit, there were some things he liked about this world. Back in Seattle, he struggled to sleep most nights Anxiety and all that. But here, not even the weight of a dozen dead men on his conscience could keep him from dreamland.

Actually, now that he thought about it, that was just a little messed up.

Nonsense, they were bad dead men, remember?

Patrik sighed, his breath misting on the chill morning air. He and the PQA had spent some time discussing the philosophical dilemma the night before, until Thalia threatened to stab him if he didn’t stop twisting and turning. Since she obviously wasn’t going to sleep before he did, he’d given up the argument then. Now in the fresh light of day…he found it was a subject he didn’t really want to continue.

Fine. So, what are we doing up this early? A spot of baby sheep murdering? Or maybe you’d like to go kick some puppies?

“Don’t they eat dogs here?” Patrik asked, his teeth chattering as he walked along the dock. He rubbed his hands together for warmth, but it didn’t seem to do much against the ocean breeze.

Sure, yeah okay, but the point stands.

Patrik rolled his eyes as he came to a stop outside the building he’d identified the night before as a General Store. “Fine,” he muttered, before allowing a smile to cross his face. “If you must know, we’re going shopping.”

At that he climbed the wooden steps and pushed open the front door. It was heavy—probably to keep it closed against the winds—but still nothing for his augmented strength. It was another reminder that not everything in this world was terrible. He needed to savour the good stuff if he was going to keep his sanity—at least until he found a way home. Only when he was safely back in Seattle could he spare the time for a proper mental breakdown.
